Australian Sailing are pleased to announce two exciting new initiatives in regional Queensland. In conjunction with Townsville Sailing Club we will be hosting a 2 day coaching clinic followed by a new regatta called North Sail in the June/July School holidays. An MOU has been signed confirming the event for 2024 and 2025. If successful, this will become a permanent fixture on the Qld regional calendar.
Commodore Wes Bailey said “When I was first approached by Australian Sailing to partner for this event, I was truly excited for the opportunity to promote sailing in the north and showcase Townsville as an amazing family and sailing venue. We are looking forward to working with Australian Sailing to make the youth clinic and North Sail a success”.
This initiative is proudly supported by the Queensland Government and will bring experienced coaches to the region and offer professional development opportunities to local coaches to build their knowledge and skills, as well as providing excellent learning outcomes for all participants.
The Townsville clinic and event will join already well-established event-based clinics at Sail Airlie (WSC), Youth Week (RQYS) and Zhik Youth Sail (KBSC).
Townsville Sailing Club is an off-the-beach club and is blessed with brilliant sailing conditions very close to the clubhouse which leads directly onto the grassed and leafy ‘The Strand’ and a golden sandy beach. Green fleet will be able to sail in protected waters close to the protective marina groin, and parents can spectate from the beach. More experienced sailors will relish the conditions further out to sea with consistent winds, minimal tide and great waves to surf when the breeze is on. Conditions in Townsville over June and July are similar to what you could expect for summer in Sydney, but with greater consistency.
